We all know what Netflix and chill really means (snigger, snigger) and yes, sometimes it's a rather nice idea to snuggle up on the couch with the intention of doing a little more than eating popcorn. But what to watch?
It may very well depend on just who you are watching with (and maybe even what sex toys you have lying around) but whether your Netflix partner will be your long-term lover, your crush, or even if you're flying solo there should, we hope, be a film on this list that fits the bill perfectly.
Stars: Jessica Williams, Chris O'Dowd
Basic Plotline: An aspiring female playwright in New York strikes up a friendship with a guy while on the rebound from a break-up.
We love this film as it's all about a woman discovering that she's sexy and worthy of all the good things that life has to offer her. It's also rather cool that her best friend has an extensive collection of vibrators and an infectious free spirit that influences our heroine greatly.
As the leads, Jessica Williams and Chris O'Dowd (yes, IT Crowd Chris O'Dowd) do have a steamy sex scene together. But it's steamy because of the steamy pillow talk rather than a display of skin, something that could be rather inspirational for your own activities later.
Stars: (A young) Brad Pitt, Julia Ormond
Basic Plotline: In the early 1900s, three brothers and their father living in the remote wilderness of Montana are affected by betrayal, history, love, nature, and war.
Yes, there is the appeal of a young Brad Pitt (and a young Aidan Quinn come to that matter) and the plot is pretty good too. The real sexiness comes from Tristan's rugged charm, his affable nature and the scenes with Julia Ormond's Susannah - especially the bath scene are rather hot as well.
Stars: Depends on the version you watch
Basic Plotline: After a crippling injury leaves her husband impotent, Lady Chatterley is torn between her love for her husband and her physical desires.
You'll find two versions of this classic tale of love and lust on Netflix. One is the 1981 film starring Sylvia Kristel (of Emmanuelle fame) and Nicholas Clay, and a newer BBC Adaptation starring Holliday Granger and Richard Madden. Of the two, we'd recommend the older work, although both are good.
The original UK publishers of the novel dared not publish until 30 years after DH Lawrence's death, and even when they did, in 1960, were charged with obscenity. The fact is that Lawrence was writing about crazy lust, bondage and female sexual empowerment long before E.L James was born, and doing it a lot better too.
Although the BBC version is well acted and there are some steamy scenes, the ethereal Kristel brings the character of Lady Chatterley to life in a way that is a lot sexier and a lot more (ahem) inspirational.
Stars: Necar Zadegan, Traci Dinwiddie
Basic Plotline: The wife - make that unhappy wife - of a pastor who preaches fervently against homosexuality strikes up a friendship with a female reporter. To her surprise, that friendship turns into a romance.
This film is often cited as a great example of one that offers lots of positive depictions of LGBT couples and yet does so in a very natural way, and that is certainly true. And yet it also stands as a movie that simply depicts sexuality in a realistic, unforced way.
The sexiest scenes are, as you might expect, those that chronicle Elena and Peyton's first physical encounters, but they are sexy in an elegant way, the opposite of some low budget porn interpretations of lesbian sex.
Stars: Karl Glusman, Klara Kristin, Aomi Muyock
Basic Plotline: An American film student living in Paris with his French girlfriend suggests they spice up their love life by adding their neighbour into the mix.
Much as that summary may make it sound like this film is little more than a higher brow porn that's not the case at all. It is very sexually charged and there is a great deal of unsimulated, unchoreographed sex, but there is also a well-acted, well- written and ultimately a rather sad story to go along with it all.
The threesome scenes ARE steamy but some of the best scenes are the more tender ones. The film's director, Gaspar Noé, says it was his intention to create a film that "will give guys a hard-on and make girls horny but also make them cry". And in our opinion he certainly fulfilled that vision very well.
Stars: Paz de la Huerta, Dianna Agron
Basic Plotline: A young girl in Nevada becomes romantically involved with a female drifter who introduces her to a life of stripping, drugs, and sexual experiences that teach her what happens when real life catches up with dark fantasy.
Part female buddy movie, part erotic thriller this story of a small town good girl and her wild pal is fun, uplifting, depressing and sad, all within the space of ninety minutes. The sex scenes vary between super hot and slightly weird but as an advertisement for the joys of desert sex, it's certainly a winner.
Stars: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe and Connie Nielsen
Basic Plotline: A self-diagnosed nymphomaniac recounts her erotic experiences to the man who saves her after she attacked.
This four-hour film is certainly not one for the sexually uninitiated as it is just what you might think its title suggests; no-holds-barred, brazened, sex-frenzy. You have viewing choices though.
Originally director Lars Von Trier envisioned the single four-hour film, but it was split into two as it was thought today's cinema goer can't sit through anything longer than a two-hour film. It was however re-released a year afterward in its entirety. You can watch Part 1 without Part 2, but believe it or not there is a real story behind all of the sexual shenanigans and it's a shame to miss out on that.
There is also a moral to the story. For all of the sexual adventures protagonist Charlie goes through in her life - experiencing threesomes, orgies and some of the deeper depths of BDSM - she finally figures out what's she's been missing out on; sex with love.
